In the province of Huesca, 24 km. Barbastro, is the sanctuary of Torreciudad, on the left bank of the river Cinca near the dam of El Grado, in a place of great natural beauty. It was built near the old chapel which is the origin of the devotion to Our Lady of Torreciudad since the eleventh century. The name comes from an old watchtower from the Arab period, the ruins of which are a few meters from the Hermitage.
El santuario está dedicado a la Virgen María. Su construcción fue promovida por San Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, fundador del Opus Dei, y se abrió al culto en 1975. El conjunto, obra del arquitecto Heliodoro Dols, destaca por la variedad de formas que logra crear con un elemento constructivo básico, el ladrillo. Es una obra de arte que interpreta de un modo creativo los elementos constructivos tradicionales en Aragón.
Inside stands the tableau , carved in alabaster by Joan Mayne, representing various scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary . In the center is the Romanesque sculpture . All lines converge on the sanctuary altar , in the center are the tabernacle , which facilitates prayer to Jesus truly present , and the carving of the Virgin . To the left an image of Saint Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer was added. In the Blessed Sacrament chapel is a Christ in gilded bronze fire , sculpted by Italian artist Pasquale Sciancalepore . Also notable is the organ, with more than four thousand pipes .
The nave includes a high choir , and below is a crypt with dozens of confessionals spread over three chapels dedicated to the invocations of the Virgen del Pilar , Loreto and Guadalupe. A fourth chapel , circular floor is reserved to the Holy Family. The building is framed by a forecourt enclosed by arches.
All activities are centered sanctuary Eucharistic worship , including the celebration of Mass , and the veneration of the Virgin. It is also place of refuge of numerous pilgrimages and processions . Admission is Free , and is provided free written and audiovisual information and guided tours.
Today is one of the most important centers of attraction in the area , welcoming organ concerts and other cultural events . In addition , promoting the call Route Mariana, which links Zaragoza ( Basilica del Pilar ) , Torreciudad , Montserrat and Lourdes. The feast of Our Lady of Torreciudad is celebrated on the Sunday following August 15 .
